Over the last few months, I had the pleasure of working with the team at Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) to conduct a survey of their campus waste streams and present recommendations for waste reduction.
OMSI has built environmental stewardship into their mission statement and are making great efforts to set an example for other institutions in the region. Working with the Energy Trust of Oregon, they have made significant strides with renewable energy and efficiency, now they are working on similar improvements around waste management.
We started with a physical waste audit which uncovered several great opportunities for waste reduction that had not previously been apparent. Engaging with staff and vendors, we were able to develop strategies to not only improve recycling and landfill diversion, but also to reduce the production of waste at its source.
Museum visitors may not see all of the changes happening behind the scenes but should rest assured that true to their mission, OMSI is making investments and decisions with the best interests of the broader community at their core.
If your business or organization is interested in taking a closer look at their waste streams and developing circular waste reduction strategies, please reach out to book a call. I’d love to explore the options to streamline operations, saving on costs and environmental impact.
